Clay begins as something soft and earthy, shaped by hand into something lasting. Through ceramics, simple pieces become bowls, mugs, plates, and vessels- each carrying the marks and creativity of the person who made it.

Making ceramics begins with preparing and shaping the clay. Artists can form clay by hand, use a pottery wheel, or molds. After the clay has been shaped, it is allowed to dry before being placed in a kiln, which is an oven that reaches greater than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

After the first firing in the kiln glazes are added to the pieces to give them color, shine, and a protective surface. Different glazes can create many different textures and patterns. The final appearance of a ceramic object depends on the type of clay, glaze and the temperature at which it is fired.

Once fired a second time, clay transforms through heat, becoming strong, durable, and timeless. Ceramics is a beautiful blend of nature, craftsmanship, and imagination.
